Waynesville Sewer System Evaluation (SSES)

Archer was selected by the City of Waynesville to assist with a Sanitary Sewer System Evaluation (SSES).

When it rains, the flows at the wastewater treatment plant increases significantly. This is the result of infiltration and inflow, also known as I&I. Inflow is surface water entering the sewer system. For example, through holes in the manhole rim, roof drains connected to the sanitary sewer or perhaps broken cleanouts in a yard. Infiltration is ground water entering the system through the pipe joints, cracks in the pipe or in a manhole. This is true for nearly every sewer system.

The SSES is a multi-phase program to reduce I&I and identify "choke points". The goal is to identify the "low hanging fruit", the specific pipes and structures where the rehabilitation dollars will have the most impact. This in turn leads to a capital improvements program. Archer will perform surveys of the sewers in the Phase 1 area and mapping of the rest of the system; flow testing will be performed in the Phase 1 area and other selected areas throughout the City; then a hydraulic modeling and capacity analysis will be presented on the Phase 1 area. These four tasks will identify the areas with the most I&I.

The next tasks are to identify the sources by inspecting pipes and manholes, and smoke testing in these high I&I areas.

Finally Archer will assist the city in developing a specific, multiyear program identifying each rehabilitation task. This program will be incorporated into the Capital Improvements Plan. The remainder of the system will be covered by subsequent phases of this evaluation.
