Bourbon Water System Improvements

The City of Bourbon has inadequate residual pressures in the western portion of their distribution system due to the lack of proper line looping and static elevation difference between it and the eastern portion of the system.

The existing water distribution has several areas of old water lines, inadequate in size and constructed of substandard materials, including galvanized steel, asbestos-concrete, etc. The City staff had already began a program of repairing and replacing these lines throughout the system.

Of greater concern, the western portion of the system experienced dangerously low static and residual system pressures, due to inadequately looped mains and the static elevation difference between this area and that of the eastern part of the system where the water storage tanks are located. This portion of the system serves numerous residential customers as well as the High School. This area does not have the water pressure or flow capacity available to meet minimum standards on a continual basis. Pressures below the minimum pressure for protection against outside contaminants (20 psi) are common in this area, presenting a high risk to public health and safety.

In an effort to improve the residual and static pressures to the users in the western portion of the City of Bourbon, Archer Engineers recommended that the City construct approximately 3,700 lineal feet of 8" PVC main with associated valves and hydrants, including two bores; construct a 100,000 gallon elevated storage tank near the High School; construct two pressure relieve valves within the existing system to separate the new pressure zone and construct a new drinking water well.

The project has required a very high level of cooperation with the City of Bourbon and required good coordination between the Engineer and the City of Bourbon Staff.
